Bo Dollis & The Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indian Band. New Orleans group I think. more info would be appreciated. Handa Wanda Pt 1 http://www.box.net/shared/5mh5ixj0r1 Handa Wanda Pt 2 http://www.box.net/shared/4gno9xqz2n
this record is pretty damn collectable, and just about as hard core New Orleans as you'll find...[don't get too close or i'll knock you in the head for it]..
It's the first recording by the Wild Magnolias....and one of the very few Mardi Gras Indian chant-type recordings made before the Magnolias and the Wild Tchoupitoulas started putting out albums in the mid-seventies....
in fact, the only others i can think of issued prior to this single are, Jock-a-mo by Sugar Boy Crawford, Iko Iko by the Dixie Cups, and another rarely heard song by the Dixie Cups called Two-Way-Poc-Away.....
Willie Tee plays piano on the record, Zigaboo Modeliste plays drums, and there's a bass player whose name i can't remember...the percussion is by the Wild Magnolias....
Bo Dollis is the 'Big Chief' of the Wild Magnolias..has been since the mid-sixties..
the 'Cosmic Q' on the label is Quint Davis who now runs Jazzfest...he arranged the session when he was still in college...
i believe it was recorded in 1970...but i'm not 100% sure...
unfortunately the sound on this type of thing is always bad as the 'battles' are always in the street, but that's also really the point...Handa Wanda and other songs like it are street chants..
